Le mot Kototama signifie "mots-âmes" et fait référence à la science des sons purs dont découle la pratique des sons sacrés anciens dans la tradition japonaise. Ce chant repose ici sur la série de voyelles "A E I O U", et se décline en syllabes suivantes :

WA RA YA MA HA NA TA SA KA
WE RE YE ME HE NE TE SE KE
WI RI YI MI HI NI CHI SHI KI
WO RO YO MO HO NO TO SO KO
WU RU YU MU FU NU TSU SU KU

Certaines syllabes n'existent pas dans l'alphabet japonais (kana), mais ont été ajoutées ici afin d'apporter une cohérence dans l'enchaînement phonétique.
